Bürgermeisterwahl in Cicely. Edna Hancock, die eigenbrötlerische Nachbarin von Maurice, tritt gegen Holling an. Holling bekleidet das Amt bereits seit 23 Jahren. Er ist über Ednas Kandidatur entrüstet. Er will sie "zerstören" und geht auf Stimmenfang. Shelly erregt Hollings Kampf um Macht und Einfluß ungeheuer. Die Stadtschreiberin Ruth-Anne zwingt Joel das Amt des Wahlkampfbeauftragten auf und er muß nun mit Maggie (Vorsitzende des Wahlkomitees) die Wahl organisieren. Chris feiert die Bürgermeisterwahl als hohes patriotisches Ereignis, obwohl er als verurteilter Straftäter keine Wahlberechtigung besitzt. Ed hingegen ist das erste Mal dabei... Trotz Freibier im Brick gelingt der "friedliche Regierungswechsel": Holling erhält 247, Edna 255 Stimmen! "Der Prozeß hat funktioniert."
